When Willians Mollo Flores was out walking his dog at night near his home in Chile earlier this month, he never thought he would end up saving a life. But he did much more than that. He saved two.
Passing by an old construction site, Flores noticed his dog was pulling on the leash in a direction that was deviating from their path. Flores quickly understood why.
“My dog led me to an abandoned puppy,” Flores told The Dodo. “That dog howls a lot.”
But, it turns out, the pup isn’t just trying to get Flores’ attention for himself.
Abandoned puppies stand with many deep, open holes. Inside one of them is another dog.
He was trapped.
Suddenly, the actions of the first dog made sense.
“He’s asking for help,” Flores said. “His brother is in a hole and he can’t come out alone.”
“I didn’t know how to react,” Flores said. “It was a very stressful time. But I ran home to grab water, food, and rope and then came to help the dog. I climbed into the hole and managed to get the puppy out.”
Once safely out of the hole, the trapped dog ran to his siblings, seemingly to thank them for his role in rescuing him.
The dogs ate the food Flores brought and drank water, but they were still too weak to follow him home. So, Flores stayed there with them. For the next four hours, he sought the help of others on social media.
This is animal rescuer Valeska Torres Tapia Learn about the situation. Even though it was already midnight, she made it to the scene—relieving Flores from lifesaving duties.
“I brought the dog home,” Tapia told Dodo. “They were scared, but I gave them all the love I could show them.”
After returning to her place, Tapia bathed and groomed the dog. There, she could see the loyalty between them, the loyalty they shared so deeply in helping them get rescued.
“They are inseparable,” Tapia said. “It’s the most beautiful thing.”
She named them Angel and Salvador.
While it’s not entirely clear how the dogs ended up alone, with one trapped in a hole, Tapia believes they were abandoned there by the operators of a puppy mill.
It seems that the only thing they know to trust is each other.
“They hug each other, take care of each other, and don’t let go,” Tapia said. “These two little guys are like conjoined twins because they’re always hugging.”
It’s only been a few weeks since Flores and his dog happened to Angel and Salvador in an abandoned, desperate place, but they’ve found a home together forever. Tapia decided to adopt the dogs herself.
“After rescuing a dog, I always try to find a good family for them,” she said. “But I know Angel and El Salvador have a hard time finding a family because they’re inseparable. They can’t be separated. So, I’ll keep them – I’ll give them more love than they ever imagined.”
