Deer befriend dogs on fence, come back every day to visit

When Holly Faulconer first noticed a deer coming to steal seeds from her bird feeder, she was fascinated by this brave fawn.

Soon, however, the fawn she named Sassafras appeared for a completely different reason. She wants to meet her new best friend, Falconer’s dog, Huey.

Faulconer rescued Huey nine years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Huey was very protective of his mom, so he was surprised when Falconnor began to show interest in being friends with Sassafras rather than seeing the curious deer as a threat.

“Huey was a little confused at first and very cautious,” Faulconer told The Dodo. “I’ll talk to both of them to make sure they both feel safe. Slowly, they start talking over the fence!”

Now, Sassafras often returns to swap stories with her new BFF.

Sometimes, Sassafras even brings her two children to visit.

“It’s absolutely adorable,” Falconer said. “I love watching them.”

For Huey and Sassafras, it doesn’t matter that they are different species. What really matters is reliability, kindness, and, well, high enough to chat across the fence.
